Review - Footy Practice in Liverpool
Budding footballing legend, Mike Bolton (a finance manager from Liverpool, tries his best (aah!) to impress the uni football freaks at The Mystery in Liverpool. Will he be the next Wayne Rooney? May be not ...
If you’re a student in Liverpool and you want to have a kick-about then get down to The Mystery in Wavertree one Saturday. A bunch of students from the nearby university halls of residence meet there each week at 11am opposite the athletics track.
This is all about having a laugh and enjoying playing football with mates and new people. The group can be made up of anything up to 30 people and all levels of ability are included, although I suspect my display of skills may have redefined the term “donkey”!
Depending on numbers the group either splits into 2 teams or plays on a rotation basis to make sure everyone gets a go. There is no formal training or exercises but the event is well run with cones and bibs provided to ensure everything goes smoothly. If it’s proper squad action you’re after though this could also be a great place to start as the group links into a more formal Wednesday night team which competes in the University Leagues. (For me though, the ability to get out of bed at a “respectable” time on a Saturday, enjoy a couple of hours of running around and enjoying myself, followed by a bacon buttie or whatever I can knock up is far more preferable!).
The welcome I got when going along one weekend was excellent with lots of friendly banter, conversations and no attitude, which can be a rare thing on a footy pitch! If it sounds like your cup of tea, get down there and get stuck in, jumpers for goal posts, hmmm, isn’t it???
