Entertainment Review of February 08
It was the month of the big ones; from The Oscars to the beloved Brits, we take a look at the winners, the losers and whether or not we still really care anymore!! We’ve taken a stroll down the red carpet, read all about it…
Low Rating Oscars
The Oscars are usually associated with glamour and prestige and while this year’s show was full of just that, it seems the public didn’t bother to tune it to find out. The TV broadcast of the awards ceremony received its lowest rating since the current ratings system was introduced in 1974. Nevertheless, all who attended and involved seemed to enjoy the night, especially the winners. The Cohen brothers, Joel and Ethan, stole the show with their recent blockbuster No Country For Old Men winning four awards. All of the acting Oscars went to Europe including Daniel Day Lewis for his role in There Will Be Blood and also Tilda Swinton (made famous as The White Witch in Narnia) for her role in Michael Clayton. The teenage pregnancy film, Juno was the only one of the top five films to break the $100m barrier at the US Box Office, but as for the rest – it seems critical acclaim has lost its touch with what the public really love to watch.
Rambo No-Go
Sylvester Stallone was big news when, at the age of 61, he shot Rambo number 4. Stallone lost 20kg to play the part in a film about civil war that he describes as “horrific and bloody”. Stallone and his crew received death threats whilst on set and the film had mixed reviews when it hit the box office. Is it just a repeat of what happened with Rocky? It seems now is definitely time for old Sly to hang up his gloves/guns and take a rest – does retirement not exist in Hollywood??!! What We Think...
What is it that makes older stars continue to work? Is it that they actually found a vocation in life that they genuinely love, is it the drive to make every penny they can? Do they want to keep adding to their accalaides and have more stories for the grand kids or are their big houses so big that they get bored watching their re runs? Why shouldn’t they take up every opportunity? Each movie set must have its own character and challenges. If it keeps them off the streets then why shouldn’t they have their slice of the action?!
Boasting BRITS
Another year of new talent for Britian, with the likes of Kate Nash, Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson all appearing from the woodwork to become major record artists. Speaking of Ms Winehouse, despite not winning any awards she was the talk of the show after her Wednesday night performance. Some say it wasn’t quite vintage Winehouse, but she still managed to steal the show which included other BRIT legends such as Paul McCartney and British Breakthrough Act winner Mika. The Artic Monkeys won British Album and British Group awards while the Foo Fighters took the Internationals. The night was all round success and confirmed that Comeback Kings, Take That, were not comeback one-hit-wonders when they took the award for British Live Act.
What We Think...
The Brits is a fantastic celebration of up and coming musical talent in the pop world and it’s great to see these musicians who have spent so much time crafting their acts and talents be rewarded for their work and in the papers for the right reasons. Three cheers for awards ceremonies. Hip hip hooray!
Britney Prodigy
As Britneys headline antics fade into the normality of Hollywood drama, Mischa Barton is following close behind. The star of The O.C was charged with driving under the influence, without a licence and for possession of Marijuana after being arrested late December last year.
What We Think
Let’s just hope the trend doesn’t catch on…
